The Dolmuş Network
Dolmuş (shared minibus taxis) are the backbone of local transport in Cappadocia. Several routes connect the main towns and villages throughout the day, running from around 08:00 to 19:00 in summer and with reduced frequency in winter. The main routes connect Göreme with Avanos (20 minutes), Göreme with Ürgüp (20 minutes), Göreme with Nevşehir bus station (30 minutes), Ürgüp with Uçhisar (15 minutes), and Nevşehir with Uçhisar (20 minutes).
Fares are low — typically 10-20 Turkish lira per ride. Payment is cash, in the vehicle, usually to the driver or to an assistant who comes around to collect. You hail the dolmuş from the roadside or at the recognised stops in each village; in Göreme, the main stop is adjacent to the bus station near the village center.
What's Accessible by Dolmuş
With time and patience, most of the main sites are accessible by dolmuş or by dolmuş combined with walking. The Göreme Open Air Museum is 1.5 kilometres from Göreme village center — walkable but also accessible from the main road dolmuş. Uçhisar Castle is in the village center of Uçhisar, reachable by dolmuş from Göreme. Avanos pottery workshops are central and accessible from the Göreme-Avanos dolmuş.
The underground cities at Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are harder by public transport: you'd need to take the dolmuş to Nevşehir, then a local bus south. In practice, most independent visitors either rent a car for the underground cities or join an organised tour.
Rental Cars and Scooters
Car rental is available in both Kayseri and Nevşehir, and from a handful of operators in Göreme. A car opens up the underground cities, Ihlara Valley, the less-visited valleys, and the pottery workshops in the smaller villages between the main towns. Road conditions are generally good; parking at most sites is straightforward.
Scooter and ATV rental is widely advertised in Göreme and is legal on the minor roads. The main roads carry enough traffic to make motorcycle riding feel exposed; the valley tracks that ATVs are designed for are mostly on private agricultural land. Both are more popular with visitors than the risk-adjusted reality probably warrants.
For Airport Transfers
Airport to hotel and hotel to airport is not practically served by the dolmuş network. For this specific journey, our Kayseri Airport and Nevşehir Airport shared shuttle or private transfer services are the appropriate solution.
